Known as Datu Bulan, the 19-year-old leader of the Bagobo tribe from southern Mindanao, was admired for his handsome physique as well as for his elegant dress decoration, when he and some of his comrades participated at the 1904 American World Fair, better known as the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, in Saint Louis, Missouri.

On that occasion, 47 hectares of land was turned into a large exhibition to show what they called the “largest and the finest colonial exhibit” or the largest exhibition of indigenous Filipinos comprising more than 1,100 people, including groups of Negrito, Igorot, Moro, Bagobo, Tagalog and Bisaya, part of the Philippine Exhibition presented as live exhibits.
